Manifesto of Solidarity
Preamble
The Mediterranean Institute of Fundamental Physics is committed to fostering a community built on solidarity, collaboration, and mutual respect. We believe that scientific progress is enhanced when researchers from diverse backgrounds work together in an environment of trust and support.
Core Principles of Solidarity
1. Scientific Freedom and Universal Access — Knowledge is a common heritage of humanity, and access to scientific research should not be limited by geography, wealth, or institutional prestige.
2. International Collaboration Without Borders — The most transformative scientific breakthroughs emerge from collaborative efforts that draw upon diverse perspectives, methodologies, and areas of expertise.
3. Support for Researchers in Adversity — Researchers around the world face significant challenges, including political instability, armed conflict, economic hardship, and displacement.
4. Mentorship and the Next Generation — The future of fundamental physics depends on the education and empowerment of young scientists through mentorship and support programs.
5. Integrity and Ethical Conduct — Solidarity must be grounded in integrity. MIFP upholds the highest ethical standards in all aspects of its operations.
6. Respect for Cultural and Scientific Diversity — The strength of the scientific community lies in its diversity of thought, background, and approach to research.
Our Commitment
- Organize international conferences — At least three international conferences and workshops annually in locations that facilitate participation from Mediterranean basin, Middle East, Africa, and other underrepresented regions.
- Establish solidarity grant program — Provide financial support to researchers facing displacement, persecution, or severe economic hardship, including emergency travel grants and temporary research positions.
- Develop mentorship network — Connect early-career researchers with experienced scientists across MIFP's international network, offering structured guidance on research directions and career development.
- Publish research openly — Through open-access channels, ensuring that scientific findings are freely available to researchers worldwide regardless of subscription access.
- Advocate for policy changes — At national and international levels that promote scientific freedom, protect the rights of researchers, and increase funding for fundamental research in developing nations.
- Conduct annual review — To assess impact, identify areas for improvement, and ensure accountability to our members and the broader scientific community.
By adopting this manifesto, we affirm that solidarity is not merely an aspiration but a concrete practice — one that requires sustained effort, mutual accountability, and a willingness to place the collective good above individual advantage. Together, we can ensure that the pursuit of fundamental knowledge remains a force for unity, progress, and hope in an increasingly complex and fragmented world.
